S corporation in Florida: what the election changes
Florida adds little to the S-corp math: no personal income tax, no corporate tax on an ordinary S corporation, and reemployment tax on your salary.
Choose a state and enter your profit and salary to see the comparison.
No entity tax for an ordinary S corporation
Florida’s 5.5% corporate income tax reaches an S corporation only on income it owes federal tax on itself (built-in gains or excess passive income). An ordinary operating S corporation owes none and files no Florida corporate return.
The annual report fee follows the state-law entity, not the tax election: an LLC that elects keeps paying $138.75. Reports filed after May 1 owe a $400 late fee.
Reemployment tax on your salary
Florida’s reemployment (unemployment) tax is 2.7% for a new employer on the first $7,000 of wages, until the account has been chargeable for 8 calendar quarters. Any officer of a corporation is an employee.
