You’ll need: last year’s Schedule C (line 31) and the W-2 from any job you also hold. Everything else starts at a typical value you can change.

The state

South Dakota has no corporate income tax and no personal income tax. There is no state S election, form or return to file.

An LLC that elects stays an LLC and keeps filing the same annual report with the Secretary of State: $55 online or $70 on paper. A corporation pays the same amounts, so the election does not change the fee.

Unemployment tax on your salary

South Dakota calls it reemployment assistance tax. A new employer pays a 1.2% contribution in its first year plus a 0.55% investment fee, 1.75% in all, on the first $15,000 of wages. After the first year the contribution drops to 1.0%, plus the fee, while the account balance stays positive. Construction employers start higher.

Corporate officers are covered. The Department of Labor and Regulation says the pay an S corporation gives its shareholder-employee is subject to the tax. The calculator uses the first-year rate.

Worked examples

A single-member LLC owner, single filer, 22% federal bracket, default payroll and return costs. The figure is total tax and added costs as an S corporation compared with staying as you are.
